Copp's Hill Burying Ground

Copp's Hill Burying Ground sits atop Cop's Hill, one of the three hills of Boston, in...

I was surprised by a couple of things when I visited Copp's Hill Burying Ground.  I was there early in the morning, probably not much past 7 AM on a spring morning.

The first surprise was a bird trying to land on my head while I was taking a photo!  This has never happened to me before: for the first moment very unsettling, but pretty funny thereafter.

The second surprise was that this is, by far, my favorite stop on Boston's Freedom Trail.  I would never have guessed.

That it was a quiet and pleasant sunny morning after many days of cold rain, bright and green overlooking the Harbor is certainly a part of the appeal.

However, the other part is that here I really felt a connection to Boston of old, and especially the Revolution.

From this vantage point the steeple of the Old North Church is still plainly visible.  You can see Charlestown and the Harbor, and you can easily imagine Paul Revere making the crossing.

You can envision the cannon on Copp's Hill being aimed at Bunker Hill which is plainly visible.

It's possible to gaze across the Charles River and think of the soldiers travelling to Bunker Hill and the Cambridge Common.

All in all a pretty spectacular place to look at the landscape and ponder the events that took place thereupon.
