This is a view of the Gilbertville covered bridge from the Hardwick (Gilbertville) side of the Ware River.Note the concrete barriers; the bridge is currently (2007) closed to vehicle traffic.

Gilbertville Covered Bridge National Register Plaque

This is the plaque which marks that the Gilbertville covered bridge has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior.The plaque is on the Hardwick (Gilbertville) bridge front; as you are facing the bridge, the plaque is on the right column.

Bridge Weight Limit Sign

This sign is above the Ware bridge entrance. Its inscription is difficult to read in the photograph; it states: UNSAFE OVER6 TONBoard of SelectmenWare, MassachusettsThe age of this sign is not known, though it probably does not date to the initial 1886 bridge construction.

Covered Bridge Door

These large wooden structures appear to be doors (two on each side) to the Gilbertville Covered Bridge. What is the function of these doors? Were they meant to seal out the elements? Prevent river crossings without toll payment?
