On April 21st, 1941, a Great Fire broke out in Marshfield, Massachusetts. It began in the Fieldston area, at the corner of Plymouth Avenue and Ocean Street, ignited by a carelessly flicked cigarette butt that was fanned by an unseasonable strong wind. It scorched the Ocean Bluff area to mere ashes and then raged through the north end of Brant Rock, where it eventually was extinguished at Samoset Street.  "The Great Brant Rock Fire" of 1941 destroyed, 446 Houses, 96 Garages, 12 Stores, 2 Hotels, a Casino, a Post Office, and a Church. Miraculously, no one was killed. This marker commemorates that unforgettable fire.
