The Ware River falls/spillways are located just outside the center of Ware, MA. It appears that the Ware River was dammed to provide a predictible water flow to the downstream industrial buildings. The canal runs along the (appropriately named) Canal Street before it disappears underneath East Main Street.
There are actually two separate spillways at this site. The one nearest to Canal Street is clearly man-made with a footbridge leading over the spillway to a control building. It is not known if the second spillway is man-made. One guess is that the second spillway is a naturaly waterfall, while the first was created to control the waterflow into the canal.
An accurate history of the canal and spillways is unknown.
The best vantage point for the Ware River spillways is by walking down Canal Street to where it loops back on itself. Unfortunately, the approach has been fenced off; walking across the footbridge isn't possible right now.
If you are driving to this location, there is parking available on Park Street. Use caution when walking from Park to Canal. You will briefly step onto East Main Street, which is quite heavily trafficed.
